Fall prevention plays a key role in achieving good quality of life for older adults, as falls often lead to serious injuries and sometimes death. This research aims to study mm-wave radar technology as a novel wearable sensor for the detection of trip hazards. It also seeks to improve the technology through the design, simulation, and fabrication of novel antennae arrays for 60 GHz, exploring novel techniques such as additive manufacturing. This work demonstrates that mm-wave radar can be used as a wearable for fall prevention, having developed two fully functional prototypes of a radar equipped smart shoe, and improved the technology.
