Preeclampsia is a devastating disease of pregnancy which has not seen major therapeutic developments in over 50 years. Here, research is presented exploring sulforaphane, a natural antioxidant, as a potential therapy for preeclampsia. This translational research spanned laboratory and clinical studies, including cellular and subcellular experiments in the placenta, exploring effects on mitochondria. The effects of sulforaphane of maternal blood vessels were established using ex-vivo vascular methods. Finally, the laboratory findings informed pharmacokinetic dosing studies in non-pregnant and pregnant women. The overarching aim of this thesis is to contribute to improved outcomes for pregnant women with preeclampsia and their babies.
