This thesis investigates improvements to the reliability and stability of shipboard power systems. Firstly, it proposes a method for protecting large lithium-Ion battery systems on board the ship during external electrical faults. This is challenging due to the high DC fault currents involved. Additionally, the thesis proposes improved control strategies for battery energy storage systems and the propulsion motor drives to more tightly regulate the frequency and voltage of the network. This improved regulation is crucial as it maintains the power system at a stable operating point during large disturbances, and mitigates emergency load shedding or blackouts.
