English teachers play a powerful role in helping their students learn to communicate effectively with other people about the problems facing society. This work is especially important in a digital and increasingly contentious world. However, little is known about how English teachers in Australia develop their students’ abilities in this area. In this context, this thesis explores how secondary English teachers help their students to engage in productive dialogue with others about issues that play out in the media.
