Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death and disabilities in Bangladesh. This thesis examines the readiness of primary healthcare (PHC) system to manage major NCDs: diabetes mellitus, cervical cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. The readiness of the PHC system is remarkably low in managing NCDs. Shortage of basic amenities, equipment and diagnostic facilities, essential medicines, trained workforces, poor self-management practice, and unregulated informal healthcare providers limit the capacity of the PHC system. An effective PHC system is urgently needed to minimise the disease and financial burden associated with NCDs.
