My thesis is on the prevention of a common complication after heart bypass surgery namely a fast and irregular heart beat known as postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). Although several aetiological factors have been associated with this condition, the understanding now is that it was due to both inflammatory and oxidative pathways. Hence I postulated that the use of a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative agent, namely tocotrienol, which is an isomer of vitamin-E, and in abundance in palm oil; might mitigate this problem. This study was designed as a double-blind study where both the investigators and patients were blinded to treatment.
