Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), comprising ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, commonly affects women of childbearing age and if inadequately controlled, can have negative impacts on the health of both mothers and babies. In this study, we have defined how to accurately monitor and safely manage medical therapies for IBD in pregnancy. We have also explored how these medications and IBD itself impact the immune system of mothers and their infants. Our findings have influenced international IBD pregnancy guidelines.
