This thesis investigates how polarised mid-infrared light can be used to determine the orientation of molecules in biological tissues on a microscopic scale. Numerous advances are identified, improving the accuracy and accessibility of this technique. The development of this technique will provide an additional tool to understand and potentially diagnose various diseases.
