Phase-change heat transfer can be augmented by introducing surface functionalization by changing the surface wettability and surface energy. The liquid vaporizes and absorbs a large amount of latent heat from the surface, changing from the liquid state to the gaseous state. Subsequently, the surface temperature is reduced significantly. Graphene is used as functionalization material to alter the surface wettability while enhances the phase-change heat transfer characteristic of the heated surface. Graphene has unique property of fast water permeation attributed by the capillary driven force and ultralow-friction passage. Water molecules transport unimpededly forming ultrathin liquid film for fast evaporation rate.
