thesis
posted on 2025-07-09, 06:09 authored by Harish Kalra
Mental disorders experienced by women during pregnancy and postnatal period are collectively known as perinatal mental disorders. They are present worldwide with higher occurrence in low- and middle-income countries like India versus rich nations. Perinatal mental disorders in India are poorly recognised. This thesis provides robust and high-quality evidence to highlight the high burden of these disorders among women in India and current gaps in the national maternity and mental health policies and programs. It emphasizes the need to urgently incorporate perinatal mental health in the routine maternity care system, to meet the mental health needs of women in India.
