Burden distribution is the most important way of controlling the blast furnace operation. The current model offers limited ability to control the particle behaviors that affect the final distribution. This thesis develops a 3D sector model and applies large-scale CFD-DEM simulation by using open-source software to predict burden distribution under the gas flow effect. It considers the impact of gas drag effects on particle segregation phenomena and gives details about particle behaviors under various conditions. It extends the 3D sector model to a comprehensive blast furnace model to help improve predictability and reliability in the industry operations.
