This history of St. Mary's Hall is an account of how St. Mary's was isolated and how it exacerbated, relieved, offset and reversed that isolation. Within this scenario, the St. Mary's residents led their lives and, beyond all else, their reminiscences reveal that they regard as precious these times in which they lived. The history aims, then, to capture their experiences while they were at St. Mary's Hall rather than to document their later achievements. The history is, as well, a chronicle of human success and struggle, and of human strength and limitedness. That is as it should be since these are the features of each human life.
