Infections caused by fungi, also known as, invasive fungal disease (IFD) remains a life threatening complication amongst individuals with reduced immune system. The management of IFD is challenging due to difficulties in establishing early diagnosis and limited treatment options. This thesis has generated critical evidence to optimise the management of IFD in individuals receiving chemotherapy, those undergoing bone marrow transplant, and lung transplant recipients. The contemporary distribution of the causative pathogens, risk factors, treatment and outcomes of IFD are identified. The safety and effectiveness of antifungal medications in preventing this difficult to treat infection is also established.
