Optimisation of First Seizure Management

thesis
posted on 2021-05-24, 05:30 authored by EMMA CAROLINE FOSTER
More than 14,000 Australians experience a first seizure each year. Although first seizures are common, their health and economic impact is not well studied. The research completed during this candidature revealed the risk of first seizure-related injuries and death, associated medical and psychiatric illnesses, and the immense health economic burden of seizures. It explored how first seizures are currently managed in hospitals, and ways in which this may be improved. It identified risk factors for mood and cognitive disorders in people with seizure disorders. This research helps us understand the burden of first seizures, and ways to mitigate this.
