CVD is among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Economically, the impact of CVD borne by healthcare systems poses a real threat to the implementation and sustainability of universal healthcare. With the current burden posed by CVD and prevalence rates projected to increase in the coming decades, identifying and implementing novel, cost-effective healthcare policies to address key risk factors is crucial to provide high-value care and guarantee the sustainability of universal healthcare. This thesis presents an analysis of the healthcare and societal burden of CVD in Australia and evaluates novel prevention and management strategies from a health economics perspective.
