This study is an investigation of children's departments of general bookshops and specialist children's bookshops between 1945 and 1993, focusing on the history of 35 bookshops in Melbourne. Reasons underlying the development of the specialist bookshops are put forward and various aspects of the bookshops are examined, including staff, stock, services, promotional activities, innovations and challenges and archival and bibliographic resources. A comprehensive bibliography of material by and about Albert Ullin and The Little Bookroom is incorporated in the appendices.
