In aluminium alloys, the distribution of the metastable pit sizes estimated from the current transient is inconsistent with the actual values. While this discrepancy is attributed to the copious hydrogen evolution occurring within the pits, the influence of other predominant factors such as the spatiotemporal evolution of pit events has remained unexplored. With the insights derived, by correlating current transients to their respective metastable pit events in situ, using a novel approach based on mapping hydrogen evolution, this dissertation evaluates how the actual and estimated metastable pit volumes compare and the factors that affect the reliability of such estimation.
