The increasing level of pollution by the presence of particulates and bacteria leads to respiratory diseases such as asthma, characterised by inflammation and difficulty in breathing. Current treatments with corticosteroids and anti-inflammatories like statins are ineffective due to adverse effects such as increased blood pressure, chest pain and obesity to name a few. We demonstrated for the first time, the role of amino acid (glycine) as an anti-inflammatory agent, capable of reducing lung inflammation and improving lung function. The ultrafine glycine-coated particles can be encapsulated in larger glycine microspheres for delivery via dry powder inhaler for therapeutic use.
