Omega-5-gliadin (O5G) allergy causes the unique syndrome of wheat-dependent exercise-induced allergy. I studied 43 adults with this condition and compared the findings to those with peanut allergy. In distinction to peanut allergy, O5G allergy was of adult-onset, associated with less atopic burden and more frequent reactions. The frequency of allergic reactions reduced after diagnosis but did not differ according to management strategy. Allergic reactions in O5G allergy were often related to deliberate ingestion or unexpected exercise, whilst those associated with peanut allergy were more often caused by accidental exposure and eating away from home.
