Zn-air battery (ZAB) seemingly has the future promise in the post-Li-ion battery technology for commercialization owing to its high theoretical energy density, abundance, and safety features. Nevertheless, current aqueous electrolyte-based ZAB is unsuitable owing to its lower electrochemical stability window, dendrite formation, passivation, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution reaction that limit the cycle life of aqueous-ZAB. This Ph.D. research project revealed the potential of organic electrolytes (dilute, concentrated and flexible solid polymer types) for rechargeable ZAB with an extended cycle life of 950 hours meanwhile explored corrosion, passivation and ORR-activity phenomena of the organic electrolytes for the first time.
