The overall aim of this study was to understand how nurses in non-metropolitan hospital settings, provide bereavement care to patients and families during end-of-life care. Overall the study's findings add to the limited body of knowledge concerning roles that acute care nurses' undertake as bereavement care, in non-metropolitan hospitals. Role clarity concerning bereavement care has identified key implications for nursing practice, education and research in support of quality bereavement care. The complexity of the bereavement process and the implications this has on acute care nurse to deliver individualised care to meet the unique needs of patients and families was a key learning.
