Unnecessary diagnostic tests place an increasing burden on the healthcare system and can cause harm to patients. The project investigated how diagnostic test-ordering decision-making in a public hospital emergency department setting could be supported based on a deeper understanding of this process. It proposes a detailed dual-process-based decision-making model for diagnostic test ordering and explores general design principles that can inform the design of a nudge-based clinical decision support intervention to assist with better diagnostic test ordering.
