Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) can be used to detect more subtle changes in cardiac function than can be detected by more conventional cardiac imaging techniques. In this thesis, I will focus on some novel uses of CMR in cardiac disease. Following a general introduction, the thesis will be divided into 3 main sections exploring: the use of CMR to assess cardiac fibrosis (scarring) in the genetic condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the use of CMR to calculate left ventricular wall stress in valvular heart disease, and the use 4D-flow CMR to assess blood flow patterns in the heart.
