Nineteenth Century Tourism: Destination Melbourne
thesis
posted on 2017-05-17, 00:22authored byELIZABETH GRANT FELTSCHEER
This thesis examines Melbourne as a nineteenth century tourist city and reveals the symbiotic relationship which formed between the developing city and its tourist industry.
My approach was to focus on three areas of nineteenth century life in Melbourne which were linked with tourism – enjoying the natural world, interest in new technology and museums, and pleasure and entertainment.
The relationship benefitted Melbourne, as it generated great wealth and helped to focus worldwide attention on the city and, as a result, helped to define it as a nineteenth century city with its own distinct differences from other nineteenth century cities.
