Pain symptoms and functional impairments (e.g., reduced strength) are considered hallmark signs in individuals with lower limb tendinopathy conditions (i.e., Achilles and patellar tendinopathy). However, mechanisms underlying these signs are poorly understood. This thesis aimed to determine whether altered neural function could be relevant to pain symptoms and functional impairments in Achilles or patellar tendinopathy. Research included identified novel deficits in neural function that progress our understanding for potential underlying mechanisms. In particular, there is altered pain modulation that is relevant to pain symptoms in Achilles tendinopathy, and altered excitability of neurones responsible for motor output in patellar tendinopathy.
