Musculoskeletal Behaviour in Gait – Investigating Lower Extremity Compensatory Adaptation and Compromise in Asymmetrical Gait

thesis
posted on 2021-07-21, 09:24 authored by Yap Yi Ting
This study examines the effects of asymmetrical gait on the mechanism of gait and the compromises made by the lower extremity in response to the abnormalities. The asymmetrical gait caused by unilateral knee bracing was investigated. Musculoskeletal modelling and simulation tools were used to determine the kinematic and kinetic behaviours, and muscle function of the lower limb to identify the changes and the possible gait adaptation and compromise. Changes in the gait were found to improve foot clearance, balance and weight. Some drawbacks of these adaptations were decreased ankle joint stability, and increased risk of hip and knee hyperextension.
