This thesis sought to explore differences in personality constructs between three tattoo cohorts from an Australian sample. Findings indicated that those with three or more tattoos were more alike than those without tattoos. Individuals acquire tattoos to express family, belonging and uniqueness. Of interest was the high number of respondents who reported a personal history of suicidal thoughts and behaviour and/or deliberate self-harm.
