Mother Stuff: finding a museology of mothering

thesis
posted on 2023-06-15, 12:12 authored by REBECCA LOUISE-CLARKE
To address the problem of the invisibility of motherhood in museums, I propose a manifesto for what I call a "museology of mothering," a set of curatorial design principles that provide innovative practices to free representations of motherhood from clichéd paradigms. My blueprint for a museology of mothering imagines what a museum that articulates maternal subjectivities might look and sound like. My exploration is informed by my own practice as a curator and my curatorial design experiments with digital technologies including: Virtual Reality (VR), Motion Graphics and Sound Design. Drawing on insights from my personal experiences as a mother, and local and international case studies of experimental museology and maternal art practice, I imagine a radical museum that engages with maternal objects (or “stuff”).
