Modelling transition flows with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

Flow inside drains may experience transitions between free surface and pressurized conditions. These transitions are complex and difficult to model. This research aims to model complex transient hydraulic phenomena occurring in drains using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). An Explicit Incompressible SPH (EISPH) was applied to transition flows in conduits. The main contributions of this research are: (i) the establishment of EISPH as a viable method to model transition flows in closed conduits and (ii) the development of methods to deal with inflow boundary conditions when available data are in the form of flow and water depths.
