Mineralocorticoid Receptor Regulation Of Cardiac And Renal Circadian Clocks In Biology And Disease

The global incidence of heart disease is growing in our aging population at an alarming rate. One type of blood pressure-lowering medication designed to block the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) protein in cells has shown to reduce heart disease-related hospitalisation and death. However, the use of these MR blockers is limited in some patients and can only be prescribed in less-than-optimal doses due to the risk of major side-effects in the kidney. Therefore, the goal of this project was to reveal new knowledge about actions of MR in the damaged heart to identify new ways to block its activity without compromising kidney function.
