Using a range of fossil and sediment data together with a robust chronology, this study refines a key palaeoecological record of humid tropical vegetation in Australia through the last 50,000 years. It cements the importance of fire, operating through millennial and orbital scale climate variability as well as human activity, to changes in the distribution and composition of vegetation, and should contribute significantly to future landscape management.
