Current methods used to monitor cell growth in a cell culture by means of metabolite detection are highly invasive. This is because they require to disrupt the cell culture process and take a sample of cells and/or large amounts of media to be analysed through a time consuming, complex, and expensive procedure. In this thesis, it is demonstrated that the developed new micro total analysis devices enable continuous and rapid analysis of dynamics of the cell culture media contents, e.g. glucose, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide, and physiochemical parameters, e.g. pH, in a non-invasive and user-friendly manner.
