This research presents a comprehensive investigation of the load-bearing mechanisms of rock-socketed piles through in-situ X-ray CT imaging and numerical modelling to reveal the micro-mechanics driving the pile-smear-rock interactions for a wide range of socket geometries and smear fractions. The effect of smear on the socket resistance is investigated critically through parametric studies, ultimately leading to the development of a unified shear interface model. The proposed model can be used to enhance the existing design methods for the safe and economical design of rock-socketed piles in soft rocks.
