Exploration of metal complexes for functional materials is a fundamental topic in chemistry because it may lead to the development of functional materials with new, specific, or better properties. In addition, new theory, evidence, and efficient synthetic methods may also be produced as part of the exploration. This thesis, presented in 6 chapters, covers the syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic studies of metal complexes containing cyanoacetamide (R-NH-CO-CH2-CN) ligand and its derivatives. The derivatives include cyanohydroximinoacetamide (R-NH-CO-C(NOH)-CN) and cyanonitroacetamides (R-NH-CO-C(NO2)-CN), R = picolinyl-, n-alkyl-, and morpholinyl- (in cyanohydroximinoacetamides) and picolinyl- (in cyanonitroacetamide).
