Dengue fever is a devastating disease caused by the bite of dengue virus infected mosquitoes. One strategy for its control involves the use of Wolbachia, an endosymbiotic bacterium that reduces viral replication in the mosquito. Field trials are currently assessing the ability of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes to reduce disease incidence in humans. My thesis examined the natural antiviral response of mosquitoes, with a special focus on immunity, and how Wolbachia may also be using these mosquito pathways. I also examined the role of mosquito genetic variation in the anti-dengue response in the presence and absence of Wolbachia infection.
