This thesis involves extensive experimental analyses to investigate anisotropic coal failure characteristics and mechanisms with the influence of bedding planes, loading rates (quasi-static & dynamic) and loading conditions (single and cyclic compression, tensile and shear). Coal deformation and fracturing processes are presented in detail from surface to internal. Apart from that, microseismic (acoustic emission) signals from fast-growing cracks in dynamic testing were captured and analysed for interpreting coal failure mechanisms.
