Whilst long believed to perform a solely structural role, stromal cells are connective cells within tissues and organs, which have to evolved to play a variety of roles to regulate the immune system. As a result, these cell types have been utilised successfully for immunosuppressive therapies despite many unknowns about their mechanisms of action, kinetics within the body and interactions with the immune system. Here, we investigated two types of stromal cells, the mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) and fibroblastic reticular cell (FRC) and assessed its therapeutic and biological interactions with the innate immune system.
