To address health, safety, and wellbeing issues for ageing heavy vehicle drivers in the road freight transportation industry, the PhD research program used a sociotechnical systems thinking approach, STAMP, as a theoretical framework to understand risk management for this cohort, and to inform recommendations to improve risk management where gaps in safety constraints are identified. Findings from the three studies in the research program identified that a shared sense of awareness and responsibility is needed throughout the system; specifically, formal guidance is needed from senior levels of decision-makers on how to manage ageing issues for drivers that may affect their health, safety, and wellbeing.
