The aim of this research is to identify the core problem leading to children’s exclusion from urban planning processes for vulnerable settings and present recommendations for a way forward. The specific barriers and enablers to children’s participation are examined by studying the motivations of decision-makers responsible for urban planning processes through case studies in vulnerable settings. This data then is used to propose pathways to mainstreaming children’s participation. Ultimately the research is designed to position children as active citizens in civil society and to propose recommendations to mainstream children’s participation and agency in urban planning processes for vulnerable settings.
