Children’s earliest literacies underpin their future prospects, but in Australia, differences in these skills between preschoolers from the most and least disadvantaged populations are growing. This thesis examines ways facilitated playgroups support vulnerable families to engage in activities that develop children’s early literacies into the capabilities needed for full enjoyment of Australian life. Findings provide a broader understanding of how playgroups support parent-child interaction in playful routines as mechanisms for enhancing early literacies. Challenges are also identified regarding program systems, consistency and the resources needed to deliver high quality playgroup-services to all families. Recommendations pertaining to these findings are made.
