Investigating dietary acculturation and risk for cardiometabolic disease in Chinese Immigrants

thesis
posted on 2024-07-16, 21:24 authored by SARAH DAWN LEE
This doctoral research explored the association between dietary change and risk for cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus, among Chinese immigrants to Australia. Findings from this research indicated a lack of awareness of dietary change among Chinese immigrants but also that maintaining more traditional Chinese dietary behaviours may protect against weight gain postmigration. Chinese immigrants may be at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus due to differences in fat metabolism compared to Caucasians, but further research is needed to explore this association.
