Stroke significantly contributes to death worldwide. Current treatment options available are limited. Thus, there is an urgent need to find alternative strategies to reduce the impact of stroke and improve post-stroke outcomes. In this thesis, I explored how the gut microbiome may be leveraged to improve post-stroke outcomes. My studies show that the gut gets damaged following a stroke, allowing the passage of gut microbes to the brain. Moreover, I discovered that a high-fibre diet, acting via substances produced by gut microbes, improves post-stroke outcomes in experimental models.
