Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and its gravest complication, pulmonary hypertension secondary to BPD (BPD-PH), are neonatal diseases that severely compromise cardiopulmonary function and carry short- and long-term morbidities. Despite significant improvements in neonatal care of extremely preterm infants, the incidence of BPD and BPD-PH has not significantly decreased over the last few decades and the diseases remains largely untreatable. This thesis investigates the role of the immune system in the pathogenesis of BPD and BPD-PH and thus identifies therapeutic targets to pave the way for clinical translation for the treatment of these diseases.
