This thesis investigates blood flows to facilitate the efficient design of new low-cost diagnostic techniques. These techniques utilise the visual appearance of blood after deposition on paper and glass. These can be performed with minimal equipment and in remote locations as all that is required is a drop of patient blood and a commonly available standard surface. New modelling techniques are introduced to streamline the design and optimisation of diagnostic devices by accurately predicting fluid motion.
