The gut plays a central role in determining how polyphenols (plant-derived compounds found in many foods and beverages) affect human health. This study investigates the effects of polyphenols in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and COVID-19, with an emphasis on the gut-mediated mechanisms of polyphenols. The findings indicate that polyphenols can slow starch digestion and glucose absorption in the gut, which could potentially lower post-meal blood glucose spikes, a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes in humans. Moreover, certain polyphenols decrease the SARS-CoV-2 viral entry receptors in gut cells, which may limit COVID-19 infection and progression.
