Inhibitory potential of geraniin and its metabolites extracted from the rind of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) against dengue virus type-2

Just as rambutan is a common seasonal fruit, dengue is a common seasonal disease to the Southeast Asians. The four types of dengue viruses (DENV-1 to 4) are causing havoc across the globe as there is no specific treatment exists to treat the infections. Our study was thus, aimed at investigating the potential of a compound called geraniin, which is extracted from the rind of rambutan, in inhibiting DENV-2. Through a series of experiments, we had proven that geraniin can inhibit DENV-2 in-vitro, as well as in-vivo. Hence, geraniin has the potential to be developed as a future anti-dengue drug.
