Indium is a crucial metal for renewable energy technologies, although we haven’t known how much is left. This research develops a new method that allows the global resources of specialty metals like indium to be quantified. It shows that Australia hosts more resources of indium than any other country, however we don't currently produce it. The research also explores whether electronics could be recycled for specialty metals in future, showing that this is largely not viable. However, mine wastes are shown to contain large quantities of specialty metals which could still be recovered to meet future energy needs.
