In Perpetuity: Towards a Discursive Typographic Practice

thesis
posted on 2021-03-22, 03:13 authored by VINCENT BAN SENG CHAN
This research explores the discursive possibilities of an alternative typographic practice within an expanded view of graphic design. It is structured around the enactment of a studio called Matter of Sorts which looks to respond critically to the fields of graphic design, type design and design pedagogy. These concerns are explored through a typeface, a student-run print co-operative, an informal summer school and a pricing model for digital fonts. The goal of this research is to argue for new forms of knowledge production that expand current conceptions of criticality and to offer new tactics for practices looking to operate outside a strictly market-driven paradigm.
