Sleep is commonly viewed as an individual activity. However, most Australian adults sleep with a bedpartner. We don’t fully understand processes underpinning sleep when a couple shares a bed. This includes aspects such as how frequently a person is woken by their partner during the night. This thesis explores how bedpartners influence one another’s sleep. It also asks how sleep behaviours, sleep disorders, and mental health symptoms affect someone’s sensitivity to disturbance by a bedpartner.
