In Between Colonisers: Writing Hong Kong Gothic and the Liminality of Cultural Identity

thesis
posted on 2020-12-18, 13:49 authored by LOK YIU CALVIN FUNG
My thesis asks the question, what is Hong Kong Gothic fiction? I first explore this question in my novel, The Memoirs of a Stranger from Hong Kong, which examines the underlying anxieties of those living in contemporary Hong Kong—a city whose future and position in the divide between the East and the West remain uncertain. The second critical component of my thesis studies literary representations of Hong Kong in author- and critic-defined Hong Kong Gothic fiction and proposes new ways of conceptualising the Gothic in Hong Kong.
